How to fix your iPhone that won’t turn on

By May 27, 2020

It can be frustrating that your iPhone suddenly won’t start — especially when you have to deal with important things using the phone. But the good thing is, most of the time, it’s not hard to narrow down the problem and get your iPhone work again. In general, your iPhone doesn’t turn on is either because of software or hardware problems. In some cases, it just might be the battery is empty. However, you may still be asking how exactly to fix that? Let’s move on to learn more.

Try restarting iPhone

Sometimes a software glitch in an app will prevent the phone from waking when you press the power button. Or it’s because a system file gets corrupted or ruined by some malware. You know you didn’t turn off the phone, but it is just stuck on the black screen. The simplest and the most effective remedy is forced-restart your phone. It abruptly kills all erratic apps and instantly fixes corrupt services that triggered the iPhone system to crash. Check to see what you should on different iPhone models:

For iPhone 8 and later models>>

  • Press and release the Volume Up button.
  • Then press and release the Volume Down button.
  • Finally, press and hold the Side button and then release it when the Apple logo appears.

For iPhone 7>>

Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power (Sleep/Wake) button simultaneously and then release both buttons when the Apple logo appears.

For earlier versions>>

Press and hold both the Power (Sleep/Wake) button and the Home button for a few seconds and then release both buttons when the Apple logo appears.

Charge the phone

If your iPhone doesn’t turn on even if you tried restarting it, you may need to charge it for at least 30 minutes, in case something in it is causing rapid battery drain. If the phone still won’t start, there might be something wrong with the charger. You can check to see if the Lightning port is filled with lint or debris, or if the cable suffered from any breaks or frays. Swap the cable to another if necessary.

Plug your iPhone to a computer

Another method you can try is to use the iTune to enter the Recovery Mode. This asks you to connect your iPhone to the computer using the USB cable. Once it’s connected, open iTunes on the computer and forced-restart your phone. But note that this time you need to open the Recovery Mode so you can use iTunes to repair any corrupt system files that caused the boot-up system to fail. For different iPhone variants, the process varies to put the phone in Recovery Mode.

For iPhone 8 and later models>>

  • Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
  • Then press and quickly release the Volume Down button.
  • Finally, press and hold the Side button until the Recovery Mode screen appears.

For iPhone 7 series>>

Press and hold the Side/Power button and Volume Down button simultaneously and then release both buttons when the Recovery Mode screen shows up.

For earlier models>>

Press and hold both the Home button and Top/Power buttons simultaneously and then release both buttons when the Recovery Mode screen appears.

What if your iPhone still won’t start

If all these steps cannot solve your problem, it is likely that your device has obtained some sort of physical or liquid damage, which therefore requires service. In that case, you are better off contacting Apple for help. Check to see how to set an appointment here.
